ABSTRACT
Safe and readily available water is important for public health, whether it is used for
drinking, domestic use, food production or recreational purposes. Improved water
supply and sanitation, and better management of water resources, can boost countries’
economic growth and can contribute greatly to poverty reduction. Physical and chemical
properties of water determine the quality of drinking water. This water quality is established in
terms of the specific water-quality parameters which include temperature, colour, taste, odour
specific conductivity, turbidity of water. This study explored the physico-chemical properties of
water in Abuja Municipal Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria. Water samples
from different sources of drinking water were obtained and analyzed in the laboratory for
contaminants such as manganese, lead, and so on. The study revealed that the average
temperature of the drinking water in the study areas was 30.6 degrees Celsius. There was high
level of manganese (0.95mg/L) in the water samples analyzed, and also, the source of drinking
water for majority of the households surveyed (80 percent) was tap water.
