Abstract

Road accidents are a common cause of disability and also a leading cause of death all over the world. Despite the burden of the problem in Nigeria, motorcycle injuries have not received the attention they deserve partly because of lack of local data. This study therefore focuses on addressing the negative impact of motorcycle transportation and also the problem associated with the motorcycle transportation accident such as the health effect, social effect and the economic effect. The population of the study include all motorcycle users and victims of motorcycle transportation accident in Kubwa Abuja. The total sample size used for the study is three hundred respondents (300) in kubwa (that is 100 motorcycle riders, 100 victims of motorcycle transportation accidents and 100 Policemen/Vio/Federal Road Safety Corps). The stratified random sampling method was adopted for the study. The study adopted three method of data analysis which are frequency, percentage, Chi square analysis and Pie chart. Result shows that commercial motorcycle accident in Kubwa is generally on the increase. A breakdown of contributory factors showed that the conduct of commercial motorcycle riders, lack of knowledge/ non adherence to traffic rules and their age grade are the major cause of motorcycle transportation accident in Kubwa. In view of the above result, the researcher recommend that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) should collaborate with the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN) to ensure that before any commercial motorcyclist is registered to operate, possession of valid driving license is a condition. The two bodies should, in addition, work together to discourage the use of psychoactive substances among the motorcycle riders.
