ABSTRACT

Young people in all parts of the world are more than ever exposed to alcohol culture penetrating to various parts of their home lives and leisure time activities. The use of alcohol in Nigeria is so widespread as to be common-place, the problems associated with it consumption are for greater in magnitude of its fun. Alcohol abuse has an effect on the structure and function of the brain, it has negative consequences both on social and mental health of the abuser, and this attitude of drug abuse is common among the youth whom are considered to be the leaders of tomorrow. It has been observed that there is high rate of consumption of alcohol by the youths especially in southern part of Kaduna State. It has negative implication on youths behavior/education, abuse of alcohol leads to risk of sexual behaviors among the youths that result to teenage pregnancy, it affects their performance in school due to personality disorder and impaired cognitive functioning that resulted in regular tiredness and excess of sleeping in the class. This study looks at the extent of abuse of alcohol among youths of Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The study adopted multi-stage sampling techniques using Cluster sampling method, simple random and systematic sampling techniques for the study. The participants were two hundred and fifteen (215). The results show that the major reasons why they abuse alcohol is that it makes them bold; unemployment and  illiteracy peer groups pressure, poor economic status of parents, low parental supervision, the availability of alcohol in society, cultural permission, and living in the environment where alcohol is accepted are factors. The findings of the study revealed that alcohol abuse have effects on youths. The effects of alcohol abuse are that it leads to death, poor productivity/education of youths; it causes mental disorder/health. Based on the finding it was recommended that enlightenments campaigns on the negative effect and consequences of alcohol should be organized regularly and avenue for group counseling and personal counseling should be made available for youths who abuse alcohol.
