ABSTRACT
The study examined the impacts of peer influence and religiosity on attitude towards alcohol consumption among undergraduates of Ekiti State University. The study used 194 participants selected through cluster sampling method. The data were collected using questionnaire; the Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith, Resistance to Peer Influence scale and a 19-item short version of Scale to Assess Attitude towards Alcohol and Alcoholism. A pilot study was conducted to validate these scales. Three hypotheses were tested in total; the first hypothesis was tested using Pearson’s Correlation and found out that there is a significant between the variables; peer influence, religiosity (r= 0.184, p<0.05). Also, peer influence (r= 0.260, p<0.01) and religiosity (r= 0.408, P< 0.01) have a significant relationship with attitude towards alcohol. The second hypothesis was tested using independent t-test and it was accepted, it was discovered from the result that those with high resistance to peer influence had more positive attitude towards alcohol consumption: t= -2.197, df (192), P< 0.05. The third hypothesis was also tested using independent t-test, it was accepted; t= -6.152, df (192), P< 0.01 and was found that individuals that are high on religiosity had more positive attitude towards alcohol consumption. The results were discussed in line with relevant empirical literature, conclusions and recommendations were also made based on the findings of this study.
