ABSTRACT
This study identified the impact of economic recession on public project delivery
Ekiti state,Nigeria. Economic recession is a barrier to the completion of a project
delivery. Thisisacommonissueencounteredin the construction industry across the
globe most especially in the developing countries. Ekiti-State,more than15% of
construction projects experienced more than five months delay while some were
abandoned as a result of economic recession. Hence,the study of the impact of
economicrecessiononpublicprojectdeliveryisveryimportantinordertominimizethe
delayinthe numberofprojectdelivery. Thisstudyidentifiedthemajorcausesof
economicrecessioninNigeriaandaswellsuggestedkeystrategiesforfirmstosurvive
ineconomicrecession.Adescriptiveresearchdesignisundertakenforthisstudywhile
stratifiedsamplingtechniqueswasusedviatheuseofselfadministeredquestionnaires
toobtainrelevantinformation. PopulationofthestudyincludesArchitects,Builders,
QuantitySurveyors,CivilEngineersandotherprofessionalsthatarefullyinvolvedin
constructionprojects.A totalnumberof60questionnairesweredistributedinthe
ministryofworksandinfrastructureincludingthethreeleadingconstructionfirmsin
Ado-Ekitioutofwhichfiftytwo(52)questionnaireswerereceived.Thedatacollected
wasanalyzedbydescriptivestatisticaltoolsusingfrequency,percentage,meanand
relativeimportanceindex(RII).Thestudyrevealedthatthemajorcauseofeconomic
recessioninNigeriaispooreconomicplanning.Italsorevealedthattimeoverrunisthe
mostratedimpactofeconomicrecessiononpublicprojectexecutedinEkiti-State.
Finally,retrenchmentstrategywasratedmostasthekeystrategiesforfirmstosurvive
inrecession.
