ABSTRACT

Barber’s shop is a source of infections agents both blood borne and other infestation and the sure way to prevent this is through instrument sterilization after each customer. The aim of the study was to determine the level of knowledge and the practice of instrument sterilization amongst barbers at Presco campus.Descriptive research design was used in the study. The study was guided by the four objectives. The sample size of 12 barbers was drawn using simple random sampling method guided by Nwanna’s assumption. Data was collected using questionnaires and observation. The data was collected and analyzed using statistical approaches. It was found from the data that 91.7% of the barbers around Presco campus are aware of instrument sterilization, 8.3% are not. 83.3% possess accurate knowledge of instrument sterilization amongst customers, 16.3% are not aware. 75% of the barbers practice instrument sterilization. Commonly used method of sterilization by the barbers includes chemical method and burning flame. Conclusion, majority of barbers around Presco campus of Ebonyi State University possess accurate knowledge of instrument sterilization but the method is not adequate since some micro-organism cannot be killed by flame or chemicals.  It was recommended that barbers around Presco campus should be educated on the appropriate methods of instrument sterilization. Student should endeavor to purchase their individual clippers & other barbing instrument
