ABSTRACT

This research work examines the impact of the MDGs on Poverty Alleviation in Nigeria following
some progress on the achievement of the MDGs, given the modest recovery of the
Nigerian economy since the 1990s and the various efforts of all stakeholders.
Although, poverty was till pervasive, and child mortality and maternal health
still precarious, yet literacy level were rising, gender equality and
empowerment of women are improving. HIV/AIDs pandemic, malaria and other
communicable disease reducing. In all, the rate of achievement was slow in
Nigeria with incredible financial bases and capacity.  However, the constraint are many unemployment,
poor governance and implementation of programmes, corruption, inadequacy and
misapplication of fund, leading to lack of value for money. Others are poor
infrastructure to aid production and promote domestic trade, better
co-ordination of activities among the security problems in the treasure store
of Nigeria (the Niger-Delta). Although, Nigeria has made appreciable progress
on Goal 2 and 8, as well as some partial progress on Goal 3 and 6, but faces
serious challenges on Goal 4, 5 and 7 and some indicator of Goal 6. There is a
need to consolidate on area where progress has been made while concrete efforts
is required to get the country back on tract in the areas where it faces
serious challenges. This underscores the need to address implementation
bottlenecks and defect in current policies. It is pertinent to note that to
ignite the desire and irreversible progress towards attaining the MDGs targets
need coordinated efforts, and adequate funding and focused implementation.
However, more efforts are needed to capture relevant data on all activities
about the implementation of the MDGs from the three tiers of government
regularly, that way assessing the progress of MDGs will be more practical,
robust and total. Nevertheless, the secondary method of data collection and
evaluative method was employed in this research work especially data from the
National Planning Commission (NPC), Office of the Senior Special Assistant to
the President on MDGs (OSSAP), the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS),
National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) and the United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP), textbooks, newspapers, internets etc. Finally,
government should provide opportunities for greater involvement of the private
sector, civil society organizations and development partners in the
implementation, monitoring and evaluation of MDGs – related projects
