The study was carried out in order to assess the effect of cultural practices on umbilical cord care in institute of child health Banzazzau. The purpose of the study was to identify the existing cultural practice of cord care, appropriate optimal method of cord care, to find out the relationship between orthodox and traditional method of cord care, way to improve in existing cultural practices of cord care. A descriptive research design was used in carrying out the research. A total of 100 questionnaire were distributed to the respondent and all were retrieved. The data collected were analyzed and presented using frequency distribution table and mean statistics.  The findings revealed that there are various cultural practice of umbilical care on neonate Conclusively, health education and training of traditional birth attendant (TBAs) will help to prevent harmful practices of cord care. That the  government and related health agencies should do more in the provision of health facilities, equipment and skilled manpower to facilitate access to mothers, Nurses  should emphasize the use of antiseptic technique during delivery and cutting of the umbilical cord were recommended among others.
