Abstract



This study was conducted in order to assess how
sports news especially football sports were treated in Nigerian’s newspapers,
by assessing the contents of the Nigerian sports papers, the readers interest
given to various football leagues and level of prominence attached by way of
placement and importance were also analyzed.Content analysis was used to gather
data and the study sample was derived through stratified sampling method. A
total of three (3) daily sports newspaper publications were content analyzed based
on the data gotten from the respondents during the interviews. Findings showed
that sports news reportage was highly based on foreign leagues much more than
Nigerian leagues. Again, many of the publications are not originally sourced.
bold">The recommendations among others were that the Nigerian Cambria-Bold;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold">newspapers, in general, should render
vivid and unbiased reportage of sports news, as
bold">well as scale-up more of Nigerian league content in publications as a way
of consolidating sports consciousness
