INTRODUCTION

At the beginning of the project, five students formed a team with the purpose of investigation on the use of an information system to support the e-commerce business strategy. According to Belbin (2012), when a team is performing at its best, there is usually a clear task assigned to each member of the team. Belbin (2014) reports that despite clear roles and responsibilities, teams often fall short of its full potential because most times team members are not flexible enough which can make things not to go too well. For instance, in a case where a member of a team is highly valued as an expert fails to see the more a broad picture and as such not working in line with the steps that other team members would expect. Also, in a situation where one member of the team becomes frustrated due to disagreement with an approach presented by another team member. Based on this there was a need to understand team roles to improve the performance of the team. In this context, the group sought out for various team management strategies from which Belbin’s team roles were observed and executed. Belbin suggests that by understanding a specific task for a team member within a team, the member would be able to develop their strengths and manage their weaknesses and as well improve on their team contribution. Thoughtfully, the team applied Belbin’s model to ensure that all the important team roles were covered and that potential behavioral weaknesses were addressed among the group. During, the study the team applied the use of an information system in the form of Facebook and LinkedIn to report the progress of the project on a weekly and daily basis. While using these Information System tools, the team was able to use Facebook to maintain and communicate with each other member of the group weekly and daily basis to get updates for the group report and project by creating a Facebook page where all group members were able to post updates and interact together. The coordinator required each group member to like and post meaningful and useful data that would help the team achieve its goal (See Appendix). So, it served the team as a research tool before starting the report writing. Likewise, each student was advised to create an account on LinkedIn to be able to connect with other students in subsequent groups. With this channel, each member was able to interact with classmates pursuing similar study to observe and share important ideas that helped facilitate the research(See Appendix).
