Libraries and information center are a creation of the society and since the society the dynamic it means that library and information centers should not be static. Therefore, the way they acquire process and disseminate information has been changing overtime. The library deals with the acquisition, organization, storage, and disseminate of information while information technology uses computer and telecommunication system in the handling of information. Information technology means the coming together of computers and telecommunication to handle information mechanically.
For the dissemination of information or conveyance of data, the new technology comprises of computers hardware, software, and telecommunication vehicles for automatic processing of data. The computer will first of all accepts and then store the data so that it is readily available for processing. A computer can perform any data processing task that can be (software). The modern way of sending and receiving information involves the system of television, video text, tele text, fax, email e.t.c.
The internet provides services in retrieving and dissemination of information to and from computes on the network. Integrating information technology in library will help in the automation of library materials and in sharing resources with other library locally or internationally especially with the introduction of the internet. Computerized and hooked to the internet library can receive information from any part of the world that belongs to the system.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The impact of information technology can no longer be denied as it relates to every sphere of human endeavor. Every institution largely depend on it for efficiency and effectiveness in the execution of it goals the management of every institution and most especially in the library service cannot be divorced from information as it forms the bedrock for their institution operation.
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The researcher work mainly aim at analyzing the impact of information technology in the library service, with specific reference to federal college of education Zaria.
1. Examine the major types of information technology used in library service.
2. Summarize various factors that affect the use of information technology in library service.
3. Discus how effective information technology has been a put into use in library and information service in Federal College of Education Zaria.
