Abstract


The study was a descriptive survey designed to find out Teaching methods, as it affects students attitude towards the preferences of Business Studies in Calabar South Local Government Area. Views were sampled through an 11 item Likert- Type questionnaire from teachers and semi-structured focus group and one-on-one interviews for students, parents and Circuit Supervisors. Data was subjected to frequency counts involving simple percentages and content analysis techniques using themes and comments from questionnaires and interview. This was to address the three research questions formulated to guide the study. The study revealed that Teaching methods, as it affects students attitude towards the preferences of Business Studies include: Inadequate Teaching and learning materials (T/LMs) and other study materials, teaching not done to the relevance of the syllabus, teacher and student absenteeism and lateness and Inability to complete the content of the teaching syllabus as school related factors. Outside school related factor include provision of basic needs and lack of parental involvement and monitoring mechanisms as Intensity of examinations and supervision. Recommendations made from the study was that, regular sensitization should be organized in the Municipality to inform parents about the value of education to children, the community and the nation as a whole to encourage parental involvement. Also, the Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State should supply Junior Secondary Schools in the areas with adequate teaching and learning materials as well as other study materials to help enhance teaching and learning to raise the academic standards of students. Again, the Education Sector should be strengthened and circuit supervisors should be more regular in the schools to help motivate teachers and students to work more efficiently and effectively.
