ABSTRACT

The study about the implications of urbanization on the environment aimed at finding out the factors for the development of Kyenjojo town the implication of the development of the town on the environment, measures employed to solve the environmental problems. The methods used to collect the data included observation, photographing, questionnaires, interviewing and review of already existing related literature. It was found out that a combination of factors led to the development of the town. These factors include fertile soils, good leadership, favorable climate, re1ief~ transport and trade, availability of land population growth and government initiatives. The development of the town has led to various implications on the environment such as soil degradation, destruction of natural vegetation, destruction of wild life, pollution and soil degradation. Environmental conservation measures have been tried by government, non governmental organizations community based and individuals. They include environmental education, legislative measures soil and water conservation and recommendations were made on how to use the environment wisely. They include planting more trees and grass, intensifying environmental education legal reforms and sharing responsibilities in the management of environmental resources. Finally, the growth of towns has negative impact on the environment and therefore, effective planning should be done at every level of urban growth for sustainability of environment — “our life supporting ecosystem.”
