Abstract

This study focused on assessing the instructional facilities in teaching and learning of automobile technology in tertiary institutions in south-south, Nigeria. A survey research design was adopted, the respondents for the study comprised150 lecturers and 90 automobile technologists from 11 tertiary institutions in south-south, Nigeria, making a total population of 240 respondents. An observational checklist using National Universities Commission (NUC) standard requirements and a structured questionnaire with four sections (A – D) were used as instruments for data collection. The instruments were subjected to face validation by three experts. The reliability of the instruments was established using Cronbach Alpha reliability method. The reliability of the instruments range from 0.62 to 0.65. The overall reliability coefficient was 0.64. Four research questions and one null hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significant guided the study. The frequency, percentage and mean were used to answer the research questions while t-test statistics was used to test the null hypothesis. The findings revealed among others that instructional facilities are inadequately provided for instructional purposes, and were also not functional. The study also revealed that training facilities such as tools, equipment are either not available for use, or are abandoned and neglected by the lecturers and technologists for utilization and attainment of stated objectives. Based on these findings, it is recommended that for institutions to provide and effectively utilize instructional facilities, NUC, NBTE and NCCE should insist on the provision of the minimum standards requirement of instructional facilities before any tertiary institution could be accredited to offer automobile technology.
