ABSTRACT 


The study investigated teaching indices and instructional materials as a determinant of students' academic performance in Business Studies of Junior Secondary School Ibadan North Local Government Area, Oyo State. The study distributed on hundred (100) questionnaires, to gather relevant information from all the forty-two public secondary schools in the local government. At least 2 copies of the questionnaires to each school and out of the 100 questionnaires, only ninety-seven (97) questionnaires were return. The study make used of descriptive statistics and chi-square to analysis the data collected from the field of study. The objective of the study was divided into extent to which teachers use printed teaching indices and instructional materials effectively affect academic performance in business studies of junior secondary schools in Ibadan North Local Government Area and extent to which teachers use of non-printed teaching indices and instructional materials effectively affect academic performance in business studies of junior secondary schools in Ibadan North Local Government Area. The result of the chi-square revealed that teachers use of printed indices and instructional materials effectively affect academic performance in business studies of junior secondary schools in Ibadan North Local Government Area. Also teachers use of non-printed teaching indices and instructional materials effectively affect academic performance in business studies of junior secondary schools in Ibadan North Local Government Area. 


The study concluded that teachers use of both the printed and non-printed teaching indices and instructional materials effectively affect academic performance in business studies of junior secondary schools in Ibadan North Local Government Area. Therefore, the study rejected the null hypothesis and accept the alternative hypothesis that teachers use of both he printed and non-printed teaching indices and instructional materials are significant in affecting academic performance in business studies of junior secondary school in Ibadan North Local Government Area.


The study recommended that there should be adequate provision of relevant teaching indices and instructional materials for teaching and learning in all business study in the junior secondary curriculum. Junior schools should have a functioning library, equipped with various types of indices and instructional materials for teaching and learning. Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) should also ensure that qualified teachers with information Communication Technology (ICT) skills were employed for adequate use of teaching indices and instructional materials. Lastly, the school administrators and the government must always have consultation with the experts of professionals in the design of appropriate instructional resources. In-service training programmes, workshops, seminar and conferences on the selection and use of instructional resources should organized from time to time to enrich and update the knowledge of the teachers in our schools.
