                                                           ABSTRACT


This research work tends to examine “THE UTILIZATION OF THE BIG 6 INFORMATION LITERACY MODEL IN THE ASSESSMENT OF INFORMATION LITERACY SKILLS OF POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE, BAYERO UNIVERSITY, KANO.”


            The project has been sub-divided into five main phases (chapters) which determines the findings made from the research. The first chapter, which is chapter one focuses on the background of the study as well as statement of the research problem. Also, research question that will guide this study was however pointed out and objectives of the study were depicted as well. This was followed by significance, scope and limitations of the study and concluded by operational definition of terms.


            The second chapter examines the review of related literatures that were presented under the following sub-headings: Information Needs of postgraduate students, Information Resources used by postgraduate students, Strategies adopted in utilizing information by postgraduate students, Information Literacy Skills, Challenges associated with information use by postgraduate students, Standards for Information Literacy skills assessment, as well as Theoretical / Conceptual framework of Big 6 model.


            In chapter three, research methodology, population of the study and sample size determination were pointed out. Also, the sampling techniques adopted, instrument for data collection, validity of the instrument, procedure for data collection and analysis were all examined.


            The fourth chapter examines data presentation, analysis and interpretation of the research work, while the last chapter focuses on summary of the major findings, conclusion as well as recommendations made by the researcher.
