ABSTRACT

Agro-based and bio-wastcs generally referred to as solid wastes are good stabilization materials. Different solid wastes have been used by various researchers combining two or more at different times to treat soil and improve its engineering properties since the long term performance of any construction project depends on the soundness of the underlying soils. This paper has discussed the effect of the application of lime at varying percentages of 2%, 4%, 6% and 8%, oil palm frond ash also at varying percentages of 2%, 4%, 6% . and 8%, then lime and ash at varying percentages of 2%, 4%, 6% ;rnd 8% to lateritic soil gotten from three pits along Ikole - Omuo road. Preliminary tests such as natural moisture content, specific gravity, and sieve analysis revealed the soils to be in the A-7 group of AASHTO classification which is fair to poor for constrnction hence, the need for stabilization. Atterberg limit tests, standard proctor compaction test, unco'nfined compression test and California bearing ratio tests were conducted on the soil samples before the application of additives and after their application. The results wei·e compared, conclusions drawn and relevant recommendations made.

Soils for engineering use are often classified based on properties relative to foundation support or as they might perform under pavements and in earthworks. Geotechnical classification systems today are designed to make it easy to equate field observations to estimates of engineering properties. As moisture content of a clay-like soil increases,...
