CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1    BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In the world today, business is the most essential word used by all. It enables living.
Every good business today tries to satisfy its customers in order to achieve its specific goal. This objective cannot be achieved without essential human and material resources, which are the major tools, needed to achieve this objective.
The efficiency on job performance of these human resources (manpower) cannot be over emphasized. Several authors in Business administration and organizational management have stressed the concept of efficiency on job performance.
According to the Oxford Advance Dictionary (2000), efficiency is that state of quality of being able to produce or perform a desired or satisfactory result. It is the maximum input of effort geared towards achieving a set out objective.
For one to put his/her best for efficiency he/she needs to be appreciated, recognized or praised.
According to Berelson et al, “more is an inner state that energizes, activates, or moves, (hence motivation) and that directs or channels behaviour towards goals.
Motivation is a general term applying to the entire class of drives, desires, needs, wishes and similar forces (Koontz et al 2003)
Motivation as “a drive, weapon or tools which facilitates one’s instinct towards achieving an effective and efficient job performance.
According to our course manual on psychology, “human motives are based on needs whether consciously or unconsciously felt. Some are primary needs: such as the physiological requirements for water, air, food, sex, sleep and shelter. Other needs may be regarded as psychological needs which are secondary needs: self-esteem, status, affiliation with others, affection, giving accomplishment and self- assertion.

1.2    STATEMENT OF THE RESEARCH PROBLEM
The problem in Jemok pure water industry is how workers can be motivated in order to achieve an efficient and effective job performance.
The interest of this study is to find out how or whether they are motivated. Since workers still have blood flow in their vain, as human, they need to be encourage by management in form of high salaries/wages, promotion, training, feeding allowances/food subsidies etc.
Abraham Maslow tried his best by raising some schools of thought in order to find out what increases output, until he finally landed at motivation.

1.3    RESEARCH QUESTIONS
    Does motivation have any effect on staff’s performance in an organization?
    What are the effects of motivation on staff performance in any organization?
    What factors can influence the attitude of the staff towards their job performance in the industry in question.
    What are the tools for motivating employees in an organization?

Ho:    Motivation does not affect workers performances.
Hi:    Motivation affects workers performances.

1.5    PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
Due to the importance of motivation in an organization, this study is meant to set a focus on the following:
    To identify the factors necessary for motivation which may induce the staff of the organization (Jemok Pure Water Industry) towards effective and efficient job performance e.g. high productivity etc.
    The study deals with the identification of the effect of motivation on staff performance (of Jemok Pure Water Industry), if lacking and how it will affect the efficiency and effectiveness of job performance (e.g. output etc)
    To evaluate the nature and condition of work of the employees of Jemok Pure Water Industry and how it affects their job performance.
    To also recommend/suggest, based on the research findings, ways in which the organizational growth/productivity may be enhanced through effective and efficient motivation of the employees.

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study is of greater importance to both management and employees of pure water industry other government and agencies and the society in large.
This study will benefit them in the following ways, only if they adhere to the researcher’s recommendations.
    The study enlightens the management of the organization on the motivating factors which enhances workers job performance.
    This study will also alert the management on the effect of motivation on staff performance via productivity
    It will therefore create opportunities for employees of both private and public sectors to receive their remuneration/incentives in form of motivation. When the recommendation is strictly adhere to.
    It will also create a guideline for the management of both pure water industry and other firms to maximize their profit, through motivation which may lead to higher productivity.
    It will also educate both the employers and employees on punishment on job negligence as a factor of motivation.

1.7    SCOPE OF THE STUDY
As a matter of fact, this research was meant to review motivation and its effect on productivity in both private and public organizations, but as a result of inconveniences/difficulties was narrowed to pure water industries in Delta State.
It is obvious that there are over 50 pure water industries in Delta State, as such, can not be covered by the researcher, therefore the study will only concentrate on Jemok Pure Water Industry Asaba in Oshimili South Local Government Area, Delta State.

1.9    OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS
Communication: Passing of opinion, attitude, beliefs, ideas, thoughts to other people
Performance: The degree or measure of how efficient and effective an assignment is being carried out.
Organisation: Two or more individual who work together in a structured manner to achieve a specified goal.
Motivation: The drive or urge that energizes people to perform effectively.
Organization: An organized body, persons whose purpose is to achieve a specific goal.
Employees: People employed to work in the organization.
Employers: Group of people who are authorized to employ people to work in an organization.
Environment: The atmosphere or surrounding at which an organization operates.
Personnel: Human resources of an organization.
Manager: some one that manages or supervises the activities of the employees under him on behalf of the owner, though sometimes the owner of the firm. He is also known as the entrepreneur.
