ABSTRACT

This study examined the relationship between employee discipline and organizational performance using Le’ Classic Fast Food in Isialangwa South, Abia State as a case study. The objective of the study was to determine the extent to which employee discipline influences organizational performance, identify the causes of indiscipline, and evaluate the effectiveness of disciplinary measures within the organization. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, and data were collected from a total of 44 employees using structured questionnaires. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency tables and percentages, while the hypotheses were tested using the Chi-square (χ²) statistical technique.

The findings revealed that employee discipline has a significant positive effect on organizational performance, as disciplined employees were found to be more productive, efficient, and committed to organizational goals. The study also identified poor management practices, low salary, lack of supervision, and ineffective communication as major causes of indiscipline among employees. Furthermore, the results indicated that corrective disciplinary measures such as warning letters are more commonly used and are relatively effective in promoting compliance with organizational rules.

Based on the findings, the study concluded that employee discipline is a critical factor in enhancing organizational performance, particularly in service-oriented businesses such as fast-food enterprises. The study therefore recommended that management should adopt fair and consistent disciplinary policies, improve employee motivation through better remuneration and incentives, and strengthen supervision and communication within the organization.

This study contributes to existing knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the role of discipline in improving performance within small-scale enterprises in Nigeria. It also offers practical insights for managers seeking to improve productivity and service delivery through effective disciplinary practices.
