ABSTRACT

Pension has been defined as a benefit, usually money, paid regularly to retired employees or their survivors by private businesses and federal, state and local governments. The concern of the researcher are: to find out how outright corruption and embezzlement affect pension scheme. To find out how poor supervision of pension fund administration affect pension scheme. To find out how poor record management and documentation by the pension board affect the pension scheme. To find out how default by pension fund administrators affect the scheme. The factors that constrained the study were mainly time and money constraint. While sourcing for data, the researcher made use of both primary and secondary sources of data collection. The researcher utilized questionnaires and oral interviews. Questionnaires were structured and administered to the respondents. Consequently, they answered the question with ease, this served as the primary source of data. Moreso, related literatures served as a source of secondary data. The population of the study was one hundred (100) while the sample size was eighty (80). Tables, frequencies and percentages were used to analyze the data. Data analysis and interpretation gave the following findings: that corruption and embezzlement affected the Nigerian pension schemes before the restructuring; that poor supervision of pension fund administrators affected the pension schemes; that poor record management and documentation by pension board officials affected the scheme to a high extent and that default by pension fund administrators affected the scheme. According to the findings, the following recommendations were made: Serious checks should be put in to eliminate corruption and embezzlement in the pension system. Thorough supervision of pension fund administration. Data base planning and maintenance 
Thorough checking of the laxity and inefficiency of pension fund administrators. Finally it was concluded that the contributory pension scheme should be adopted being the pension scheme that both the employer and employee contributes to.
