ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to establish the impact of students’ leadership on students’ discipline in secondayr schools in, Kasanda sub county Mubende District. The study particularly sought to find out the types of student leadership and their roles in schools, how to involve student leaders in schools and the effect of their involvement on the entire school system. The study was conducted through a descriptive cross sectional research design. Data was collected using questionnaires and interview schedules. A total of 310 respondents participated in the study. That is; 10 head teachers, 150 teachers and 150 students. Data was analyzed using descriptive analysis after getting tallies from which on percentages were calculated. The study revealed that prefects and class monitors were the commonest students’ leaders in schools. It was further discovered that capacity building was the best way to empower students’ leaders. It was further discovered that when prefects were involved in schools they improve the conduct of academic and extra- curricular activities. According to the findings discussed above, it was discovered that the commonest students’ leaders in schools were prefects and class monitors. Their main roles being upholding of school rules and regulations among students. It was further discovered that the best way to ensure that students’ leaders were involved in the running of schools was to build their capacity through seminars and workshops. Although this could involve acquisition of financial resources it was a worthwhile venture to undertake. It was also discovered that effective student leadership helps in the conduct of curricular activities, supervision of learning prorammes/school routines and prevention of strikes in schools. School leadership acts as both a medium of expression and a channel of communication which in turn improves the administration of schools.
