A CASE STUDY OF COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

EKIADOLOR –BENIN

ABSTRACT

This project or research work is a survey of an analysis of the problems students encounter during teaching practice in some secondary school in Ekiadolor. This project is divided into five chapters one is the background of the study, objective of the study, research question, significant of the study, scope of the study, limitation of the study as well as definition of teaching practice. Chapter two is concerned with review of related literature .chapter three involves methodology, instrumentation, procedure for data analysis, validation of instrument and gathering information through administration of questionnaire to selected schools. Also chapter four is devoted to analysis, interpretation and discussion of result. Here the research finds the problems which students encounter during teaching practice such as lack of teaching aids etc. and the solution to those problems. Chapter five finally involves summary, conclusion, recommendation and reference.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Teaching practice is the process whereby student teachers are sent out to various schools in order to test their ability in classroom teaching and management in learning situation. It is a very important scheme which has been in existence since the introduction of education or training college (TTC) national certificate in education (NCE) and Bachelor in education (BED)

The importance of teaching practice in teaching education programme is to test the students on what they have been taught in the classrooms as theories and how they can be able to put it into practice before they can been allowed to go into the world as a trained teacher.

From the statistics collected from the result generally the researcher has seen that student’s teachers encounter different problems during teaching practice. This research work will therefore attempt to discuss and analyze their teaching practice and will finally suggest ways by which the teaching practice exercise can be improved.

According to UDUEHI (2009) teaching practice is required from any student in the teachers college. It is also an experience of guild teaching in which the student teachers assumes increasing responsibility for directing the learning of a group of pupils over a specific period of time. Student encounter problems during teaching practice because students fail to go to orientation which is organized for them before they can go for teaching practice but most of the student teachers don’t attend the orientation. Problems that they will encounter during the teaching practice will be new to them and they cannot handle it which makes their teaching not effective.

The problems students encounter during teaching practice are lack of instructional material inadequate classroom management, lack of chairs in the classroom, over crowded classroom, problem of writing lesson note, assuage of teaching practice student teachers, lack of transportation, lack of accommodation.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The aims of carrying out this research work include the following:

1.    To analyze the problems students teachers encounter during teaching practice.

2.    To suggest solution to problems student teacher encounter during teaching practice in our schools.

RESEARCH QUESTION

This research work is based on the following research question:

1.       Do the teachers have necessary teaching materials in t    heir practicing schools?

2.       Do student’s teachers find it easy to maintain a good classroom management and control their students in their practicing schools?

3.       Are student teachers posted to schools where they can reside in the school compound?

4.       Are student teachers given the amount of work that they can cope with in their practicing schools?

5.       Are students given to teach In their field of study in the practicing school?

6.       Do the student teachers have means of transportation?

7.       Do student teachers receive financial support?

8.       Are the classes over crowded

SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

This research work is to find solutions to problems that the student teachers encounter during their teaching practices so that teaching will be simpler and enable large number of students to remain in the field of teaching after their teaching practices. The student teachers will be made to realize the problems that they are likely to encounter during teaching practices and be able to go out for the task.

The work will enable the supervisors and teaching practice organizers to understand the problems student teachers encounter during practices in order to effectively handle them whenever the arise

SCOPE OF STUDY

The study is limited to only student who are participating in the teaching practice because of the practice because of the practice nature of the study
