CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Different governments all over the world are aware of the primacy of its teenage population this is why program policies and facilities are instituted to yield healthy and enterprising leaders of the future i.e. the youths.

The world’s greatest resources for a healthy and virile nation ties in the health and population of its young people.

However, a pandemic disease which could best be described as the scourge of the 20th century reared its hideous head, as far back as 1981 AIDS, an acronym for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome has burst out of obscurity to threaten every nation with crippling social and economic tragedy. AIDS acts as a prism refracting a spectrum of controversial topics in Medicine, public health and Biomedical research.

Haiti in Caribbean Island which is supposedly a favorite holiday spot for California guys was blamed for this threatening virus. Nonetheless, the emergency of cases of AIDS among well heeled heterosexual central Africans provided an earlier target, thus, Africa joined the other groups on the list of those considered most vulnerable to infection by the virus.

Virtually everyone knows there is AIDS or is aware of the existence of it, living life, the way one has to in order to avoid contacting disease is a different issue altogether, some people have refused to give up certain ways of life they considered immensely pleasurable. This is most evident amongst our teenagers who are more than any other media of mass communication susceptible to peer pressure. In case where one is convinced of the message of the media to tow a particular path in life, one still has to contend with one’s peers who might per cure one as timid. Nonetheless, this impressionable important aspect of our society cannot be overlooked. Efforts has to be made to see if the mass media message and campaigns have any significant impact on the teenagers and thus causes them to act in one way instead of another.

STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

The urbanization of Africa with the subsequent disruption of the traditional family unit led to an increase in prostitution, a know mode of transmission of HIV in Africa. Moreover, modernization of afric has led to increased mobility with the development of better and more accessible transportation. Deteriorating health care in certain areas political changes and wars were probably all important in the development of the HIV epidemic in Africa.

In Nigeria today, the effect of cultural imperialism has made the people to change there norms. The need to dress well, look good, and generally conform to modern ways of life and peer pressure by attending parties, dating one another, reading romantic novels and watching romantic movies, have in one way or the other led to promiscuity and drug abuse our teenagers.

It is as pity that a good number of Nigeria Youths still do not believe that AIDS exists in the country and that even if it does, their spiritual and genetic makeup is such that they will not contact it. Promiscuity and drug abuse exposes highly to the risk of contacting the deadly disease AIDS.

Thus, this is one of the prices developing nations world wide have hail to pay for development. The infiltration of foreign culture into their own. The need therefore to determine the efficiency and efficiency of the mass media reports on AIDS their acceptance, influence and relevance to our teenagers is the basic of this study.
