MOTIVATION AND EMPLOYEE PRODUCTIVITY

(CASE STUDY OF NIGERIAN BOTTLING COMPANY, OWERRI)

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

            Motivation has a history that falls roughly into three phrases.  In the era of the 1st world war, the typical manager gave little thought to motivation.  The pattern of leadership was fully Boss centered.  The subordinates either did as they were told, or were fired or transferred at random.  In the year 1st and 2nd world war.  Motivation was based on various rewards.  The typical view was to treat the employees well and they will work harder and loyalty and gratitude.  Money was considered to be the major means of spurring workers towards good performance.

            In the recent time, the changed social conditions and deeper understanding of the attitudes of people at work Indicated that earlier ideas of work, motivation, depend on internal or psychological incentives than on rewards.  Motivation is not coaxing of persuading people to do what is wanted, but it is rather a process of creating organizational conditions that will enable employee to strive for superior performance.

1.2       STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

            As the society is dynamic, the business environment, is becoming sophisticated due to technological advancement and the need for motivation is to increase the rate of employee’s productivity.  Motivation is a multivariate function consisting of such variables as the existence of desired need.    Further more, Motivational facilities in some organization tail to satisfy the actual needs of the employees.  This is because, those facilities in mot cases are mere management ideas which may not actually respect employees desires.

            More so, there mismatch in drawing a relationship, between employees needs and the incentives for satisfying them.

            Owing to the catalytic implication of this management inadequacies on productivity, this project is being undertaken to assess those problems and proffer possible solution in Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) work.

 

1. 3      OBJECTIVES/PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

1.         To identity various forms of motivational facilities available in the Nigeria Bottling Company (NBC) Owerri.

2.         To identify the motivational procedures adopted in Nigeria Bottling Company (NBC) Owerri.

3.         To determine the adequacy of motivational facilities available to each level of staff.

4.         To determine the views of the (NBC) Owerri over motivation.

5.         To determine the extent to which a good motivational package will go in improving worker’s productivity in NBC Owerri.

6.         To suggest and recommend ways of improving motivational packages available to the NBC Owerri workers.

 

1.4       RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1.         What forms of motivation does the management at the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), Owerri apply?

2.         What are the procedures of their application?

3.         How adequate do the NBC staff Owerri consider the motivational facilities in their establishment?

4.         What are the general view of the NBC Owerri over motivation?

5.         Do the NBC staff, Owerri feel that good motivational packages can improve productivity?

 

1.5       SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

            After the completion of research/projects, it shall serve as a very reliable and valuable references for any one who may be n the need of solution to his motivational problems in every field of study.

            It will create necessary awareness to the establishment under focus (Nigerian Bottling Company Owerri) and advices business organization and governmental department on the best way to sue motivational facilities is to enhance productivity.

            It shall provide information on motivational facilities.  Its forms and application. It shall also make good contributions on the opinion of employees on the adequacy or insufficiency of motivational facilities in relation to productivity.

2.         Boss – centered:  An organization that is controlled by a supervisor, that is one that gives orders to workers/employees.

3.         Spurring: Something that urges a person to a greater activity.

4.         Coaxing:  To get somebody to do something by kindness a patience.

5.         Leadership style:  The attitude of the immediate supervisor.

6.         Management Attitude:  The condition of service and provision of incentives.

7.         Drive:  Energy, capacity to get things done.

8.         Personality:  The qualities that makes up a persons character.

9.         Dehumanization:  Taking away human qualities from some one.

10.       Productivity:  To increase efficiency and rate of something at which they are produced.

11.       Spectrum:  A wide range or sequence.

12.       Employee: A person employed for wages
