THE IMPACT OF TRADE UNIONISM ON THE WELFARE OF WORKERS (A CASE OF NON-ACADEMIC STAFF OZORO POLYTECHNIC) DELTA ABSTRACT This study project titled “The Impact of Trade Unionism on the Welfare of workers: A study of non-academic staff union (NASU) of Ozoro Polytechnic, Delta) looked at the trade union as an important institution in any organization. The study examines the impact of trade union in the welfare of workers. The position of the union in the organization and strength of the union in relation to other unions were found to be positively related to the workers assessment of the union in affecting their welfare in the organization in the study, the researcher utilized sampling technique as it is highly impossible for a census of the entire population to be covered. It study adopted a survey method in which questionnaire and personal observations served as primary and secondary sources of instrument. A sample of 60 was gotten from the population of 75 respondents. The statistical tools were frequency tables and percentage. The study found out that trade union have a positive significant impact on the achievement of workers welfare. And therefore recommended that unions should have good objectives and make sure that these objectives are achieved for the interest of their members and unions should make sure that they do not promise at the detriments of their members. Compromising will make the members skeptical of unions roles in meeting their needs and loose confidence in the unions.

Trade union helps to light for the interest of workers by negotiating with the management of the organization. Trade union is a product of industrial revolution in Europe. The workers in trade union have learnt from experience that they can enhance their bargaining power by combination and gain some measures of control over their wages and working conditions and make them live more secured. Workers through a vibrant union can achieve all these. It is in View of this that the study Wants to look at the impact of trade union on workers welfare.
Statement of the problem Workers Work in organizations in order to achieve their goals or needs in trying to satisfy these needs, they form or join a union. Unions as an organization are meant to Light for the Welfare of their members. It is in view of this, that the students take a look at the impact of trade union on the welfare of workers. The following research questions shall help to develop trust. Purpose of the study This study will help to achieve the following purposes: 1. To look at the impact of trade union on the welfare of workers 2. To look at the problems faced by the union in lighting for the Welfare of their members. 3. To look at the role performed by trade union in modern clay organization. 4. To look at the problems faced by unions and suggest solution to such problem by way of recommendations. 5. To increase people’s knowledge on trade unions activities as important institution in any industrial relation system.
Significance of the study The significance of this study can be divided into two categories namely, the practical and the theoretical significance. Practical significance: practically this study can or will be useful to practically managers because it will enable them to know how to deal with trade unions in their organization. The findings and recommendations of this study will be useful to practicing managers in dealing with trade union in order to make the union contribute positively to the organization. Another practical significance of this study can be seen in its usefulness to trade unionist and trade union officers. The knowledge acquired from findings and recommendations of this study can help them fight for their member’s welfare. The findings of the study can also enhance people’s knowledge on trade unions activities as an important phenomenon in any industrial relations system. Scope/ delimitation of the study. This study is solely conserved with the impact of trade union on the welfare of workers in Ozoro Polytechnic, also members of non-academic staff union are uncrowned in the study, this is because nonacademic staff union in the union investigated in this study, questionnaire shall be distribute to junior Workers in all the department in the polytechnic. Also, in looking at the study do unions in fighting for the Welfare of their members encounter the functions of trade unions on workers Welfare and problem? The research in the course of carrying out this research encountered some problem. The first problem was the attitude of the respondent because the research was dealing with unionism in the polytechnic many people were unwilling to provide information for the researcher. Many people did not return the question distributed to them by the researcher. Another problem was time factor, as a result of the harsh nature of the semester, it was not an easy task combining classroom activities and also going to collect materials for the research. Research questions The following hypothesis shall direct the trust of this study a. Does worker perception of his union affect his assessment of the union in meeting his needs in the organization? b. Does the attitude of the management affect the power of the unions in fighting for the Welfare of their member? c. Does the position of the union in the organization affect its ability to light for the welfare of the members? d. Does Workers perception of its union strengthening relation to other union in the organization affect his assessment of the union? Definition of terms • Trade union: This involves the organization of Workers formed for the purpose of maintaining and improving the working condition of its members. • Workers welfare: This can be defined as the condition or standard of living of the workers in the organizations. • Management is the use of people and other resources to accomplish organizational objectives in other words, management is the process of planning, organizing, co- ordinating, controlling and main for the purpose of optimum achievement of the organization’s objectives. Management an also be defined as the process of achieving desired goal as the effective utilization of human and material resources. • Organization: Organization is the co-ordination of activities of the number of people for the achievement of common goal through division of labour and also through the hierarchy of authority. • Needs Are things that motivates workers to work in the organization. • Union effectiveness: This refer to the extent to which unions have been able to meet the needs of their members in order words, union effectiveness refers to the ability of a union to perform their functions in the organization. • Workers perception: This refers to the strength of the union in the organization. • Trade union position: This involves the power of a union in an organization. • Attitude: A disposition that exist in person to behave in a certain way, an additional feeding (positive or negative] thought or predisposition to act towards some elements in the environment. It is an expression of emotion, imaginations and action towards idea, people and objectives. • Collection Bargaining: his refers to the process whereby the union members and' management meet to negotiate on issues affecting workers in the organization. This welfare staff comprises of the academic staff of the polytechnic, those in charge of administrative Works, e.t.c and the total member of this welfare staff is about 6.
