ABSTRACT

Private Security Company provides complementary security services to members of the society. This study assessed the performance of Private Security Company (PSC) in crime prevention and control in Kaduna Metropolis. The objectives of the study were; to assess the level of performance of PSC in crime prevention and control, investigate factors militating against effective performance of PSC, identify areas for improvement to enhance PSC performance and make recommendations that would improve performance of PSC. The study adopted both qualitative and quantitative data. The result of the study revealed that PSC reduced crime incidence and prevent/control crime to some extent, the presence of PSC creates a sense of safety and reduces fear of crime. The performance of PSC in crime prevention and control was considered effective. The study findings on factors militating against the performance of PSC in crime prevention and control showed that lack of cooperation from other security agencies, encountering armed criminal, inadequate training as well as poor working condition of PSC personnel affect the performance of PSC in crime prevention and control. However, public cooperation with PSC is not a challenge confronting the PSC. Area for improvement for effective performance of PSC, identified in the study were training of personnel, recruitment standard, working conditions of personnel and collaboration with other security agencies. The study recommends that there is need for standardize regulations or requirements in terms of the training and vetting of guards, and the quality of training and services they offer. To achieve this, NSCDC’s supervisory role of PSCs, should extent to establishing a training college for PSCs.
